Although an immensely wealthy Virginia planter and western land speculator, Washington was admired by many Americans because of his broad appeal that was far more egalitarian than some of the other founders. While the elite minds often participated in political banter, Washington did not entertain the same debates that so enthralled men like Jefferson and Hamilton on the merits of revolution.
